I have finally made the plunge into the etsy world and boy is it intimidating! There are so many beautiful products out there that I feel like whatever I put up will just make a little splash and get lost. That might be the case but here is to crossing off a goal for 2012.

Newly added to my etsy shop is a custom designed and letterpressed Valentine's day card. Please excuse the emptiness...photography is a bloody hard part of this whole process and I am not quite satisfied with my results. My goal is to have new items and updates weekly so please check in often!

With the impending big 3-0 coming up in the seemingly near future I've been thinking of doing something really wild to celebrate my youth. I have been raiding image banks for ideas on what I would want PERMANENTLY inked onto my body and it is a tough decision!

Thankfully swissmiss seems to have read my mind and just launched tattly, a line of temporary tattoos by some pretty sweet designers. These are already in my cart for a test run to see if I have the guts to really pull the trigger in the future!

My wonderful friends C + Y got married this past March! I was completely honored when they asked me to create their wedding stationary. 1. i always apply shu uemura blush first thing in the morning. in 2 seconds i get a fresh look without all the makeup hassle!

2. i love all aveeno products and lately i have been using spf 30 antiaging face lotion.

3. addicted to any lip gloss/chapstick (i usually reapply every 5 minutes) c.o. bigelow is one of my favs :)

4. my htc evo! ever since i upgraded my phone i have been on this thing every minute. checking email, facebook, and news. so so convenient for finding a quick restaurant or cross street.

I normally don't enjoy the Whitney as much as the other museums in NYC but I went this weekend for their Edward Hopper exhibit and had such a great time! I forgot how enjoyable it is to enjoy a Sunday afternoon milling through a museum with inspiring artistic friends Anna and Wonil.

Sadly my favorite Hopper painting, Chop Suey, wasn't shown but they do have other great pieces including his self portrait.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the work of Charles LeDray. His exhibit workworkworkworkwork on the second floor was filled with beautiful, intricate details and worth the price of admission!

sometimes i walk out of a store and feel giddy with my purchase. this happened just yesterday as i stopped into uo for a quick 15 minute look through before i had to meet friends for dinner. usually stopping in is uber dangerous as i rarely walk out empty handed and yesterday was no different! i got the sweetest pair of oxfords (which has been on my shopping list for awhile now).

today my decision was confirmed when i went to the urban site and saw that these are listed as "online only, top rated"AND way more expensive than what i got them for! love a great deal.

i found this tonight while i was sorting through some old files. another concept that was never used or completed but when i saw it again i wondered why. i always felt torn between using my legal chinese name or my american name. It gets old, constantly reminding people how to pronounce yan iuan and so eventually i got used to introducing myself and following it with a quick "just call me sandy". i still haven't sorted it out.. not quite ready to give up either names but maybe one day :)

these is the final product for my sister's custom letterpressed invitations!

they were the easiest couple to work for. always giving praise and pretty much loving anything i threw at them. the only restriction was the tight turnaround but i'm still very happy with how they turned out because i was able to do everything my way. for a designer that is a dream come true!

the color theme of the wedding is of course purple and i threw in splashes of blue and green to compliment. the pattern was inspired by the cupcakes that will be used in the wedding and the love birds were from a project i did a long time ago that never came to fruition.

i hope the guests enjoy opening this!

worked with a very unconventional couple to create wedding invitations that looked like the James Bond Casino Royale movie poster! they are such funny sweet people it was a great experience! it is always nice when the client is super happy with the work :)

the king and queen stamp worked out perfectly for color and theme!

a preview of my sister's letterpressed invitation! the first image is of the first run of the press (i did two more after). i love how clean and sharp the lines are! i fell even more in love with letterpress after that first pull... the second image is of course buttons! after creating some festive buttons for a friends graduation last year i knew i had to make more.

rode by the renegade craft fair today and was blown away by the amount of people creating such amazing beautiful things AND by the amount of people who were there to support it! i have never been so tempted to buy so much in such a small amount of time. way better than a mall!

happy nyc creative week! it is so exciting to see all the fun artsy events going on this week. yesterday the boyfriend and i went to a showing of the documentary handmade nation playing at the new location of textile arts center (the space is in brooklyn and it is beautiful!). we got there early and got a tutorial on how to do a basic weave; i think this could become my new favorite hobby!

if you live in nyc, check out the events (going on until sunday) and if not at least watch the documentary! very interesting stuff artists are doing out there!

i loved being surrounded by the beautiful spools of color. i think i could bask in their warmth all day.

I can now officially add letterpress knowledge under my design belt! Beyond Creative and I went to a letterpress workshop on Sunday and learned how to use all the equipment necessary to print your own letterpress pieces! The Arm Letterpress in Brooklyn is a really great place to rent out studio hours and you have access to all their great presses.

not only did we learn how to print from polymer plates, we also learned how to set wood type. seeing all wooden letters in their drawers make me happy.

some samples from the class (the only negative to hand setting type is no spell check!)

next we learned metal type. amazing but you need extreme patience! i chose a quote with 16 words and by the end I really was ready to give up. how they did this back in the day really blows my mind.

i started taking a lithography class at the manhattan graphics center last month and am loving every minute of it. well honestly loving and hating because it puts me through a roller coaster of emotions. someone in the studio told me "lithography is not for the faint of heart" and i really do believe it. well here are some images of my plates, prints, and process. many more to come!

I have been on the hunt for a bicycle for a couple of years now without much luck. Browsing through Craigslist, bike shops, and even eyeing parked bikes along the road I have yet to come across THE ONE. Well today I have! These beauties are what I have been dreaming about since childhood!

Public Bikes are joining the bike movement all across the world and will launch their collection in April! One lucky winner will win one of these babies if they enter they essay contest (oh believe me I plan to!) happy friday everyone!

i am so looking forward to a low-key weekend at home. tonight i plan to stay in and finally watch the latest harry potter movie (yes i know it came out ages ago!) and start a new little project.

here is a sneak peak...

as for the rest of the weekend, i plan to finish my book the calligrapher's daughter, watch avatar in 3D, attempt to cook a delicious yet healthy and easy to make dinner for a friend, and figure out how to use my new smartphone the htc hero! good times ahead.

studio on fire. their work is so cool! i am very tempted to purchase a few prints... especially the last piece with the chinese proverb swirled in a giant clean mess (is there such a thing? this seems the best way to describe it). it would look perfect framed in my apartment :)

green chair press also has some very simple and lovely work focused on letters and numbers.

bella figura. a new letterpress custom invitation website featuring some amazing designers. above are a couple i really enjoy but there are many more to choose from! the company is also eco friendly, not only by sustainable printing methods and paper choice but also in lifestyle! they compost in their lunch room and provide memberships to local farms for their employees...i would love to work for a company like that!

can't wait to take a letterpress class at the center for book arts in the summer! if anyone wants to join me please let me know :)

merry christmas and happy new year! i know, i know, i missed the boat already... there are so many bloggers out there who somehow manage to update everyday, take care of their kids, and create beautiful designs but i don't know how they manage to do it?!? over the holidays i visited my family in iowa and found my cutie patootie neice all grown up and boy is she a handful..not because she misbehaves (she is actually the sweetest of babies) but because she is constantly on the go! the thought of even trying to upload photos and write an entry seemed impossible.

julie & julia is now on my list of top 10 favorite movies! i fell in love with the characters, the relationships these women had with their husbands, and the idea of doing something you love no matter the risks or the hopelessness of not knowing what it is you can do.

the first thing i did after watching this movie was to search for the book! i would love to not only buy the book but also get my hands on a few episodes of Julia's show. i want to make julia child's beouf bourguignon!

anyway how beautiful are these first edition books? i love the simplicity of the covers, the jackets and the type! cookbooks these days are filled with such gorgeous photos that it is a little disappointing at times to look at your own creation and see how it falls short of the stylized perfection. i can't afford a first edition copy but i will definitely order a copy from amazon as an early christmas present to myself :)

3rd Ward Craft Fair

My friend Pink Mist Industry had a table at the 3rd Ward Craft Fair in Brooklyn this Saturday so I stopped by for a visit to show some support and scope out other wonderful artists in the area. Boy were there a lot! I wish I could have stayed for some of the workshops and tutorials. Check out more photos here.

Some artists I really loved :

Pink Mist Industry has beautiful hand embroidered cards and artworks. It is delicate but at the same time very funny and edgy.

Ceramics has always been a favorite hobby of mine. I took classes in high school and college but was never very good at throwing to my lasting regret. I took a wheel throwing class last year at the Brickhouse Cerammics Art Center in Long Island City and I highly recommend it. The classes are affordable and there is flexibility with studio hours. The only downside is you have to pay for firing each piece and pay per square inch.

I found this recipe on Design Mom and have been meaning to try it out for awhile. I finally got the chance for my potluck thanksgiving dinner and they were a huge success!

I did a test run the night before making DOUBLE the quantity and refrigerating half of the batter. The first day's batch wasn't so bad except I underestimated how sweet the glaze was! The next day I decided to sprinkle the glaze on (which also improves the presentation) and make smaller cookies. If possible I plan to always make my cookie dough the night before just because it is so much easier to place on the cookie sheet and much cleaner on the hands.

These cookies definitely make your kitchen smell nice :) give it a try!

if you haven't heard of threadless it is a great place to buy funny/cool tees and hoodies. i have had a gift certificate for awhile now and i finally got to use it this week (they were having a thanksgiving day sale).

i finally decided on this hoodie to keep me warm this winter. i love it!
